EFFECT OF CORONAVIRUS ON UNVEILING CEREMONY

Owing to the expected upsurge in the risk from COVID-19 over the coming fortnight, the Project's management has reluctantly decided to action contingency plans and has released the announcement below.

The unveiling ceremony has not been cancelled, just curtailed in what is deemed a sensible manner. The health and welfare of potential attendees, particularly the elderly and infirm, is the Project's primary consideration.

This was a difficult but necessary decision and your understanding and cooperation are requested. The alternative was to cancel the event altogether and ruin the plans of many already committed to travelling from far away places including the Far East, USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa and Southern Europe.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It will come as no surprise to you to learn that the Trustees of the Vernon Project have, for some time, been giving serious consideration to the possible implications of the Coronavirus on our unveiling ceremony on 25 March. Whilst, at present, there are no restrictions on holding large events, it is likely that, as the disease spreads, such gatherings will be discouraged or even banned. Indeed, some countries have already done this as well as imposing travel restrictions.

Current medical advice is that the elderly and those with underlying health conditions are most at risk. With the utmost respect to all, many of our supporters fall within those parameters. The advice also confirms that the situation will almost certainly deteriorate dramatically within the next two weeks. It also strongly suggests restricting travel.

In view of these prevailing circumstances, the Trustees have decided that the only responsible course of action is to curtail the event before this decision is imposed on us and with, then, serious financial consequences to the charity with respect to catering and cover for the event, and to our supporters. The monument will still be installed at Gunwharf Quays later this month and, as planned, will be unveiled on 25 March but sadly with a much reduced attendance.

The trustees will then plan to hold a Ceremony of Dedication at a later date to which you will all be invited. The date of that event will be announced once the situation becomes clearer and safer.

The intention of the trustees is that those people within a radius of about twenty miles of Gunwharf Quays should attend. Others travelling from further afield are requested not to attend. Special consideration is to be applied to those from abroad who have already bought flight tickets, and whose countries, and the UK government, permit their travel. They may also attend. By this action your committee intend to limit the attendance to fewer than three hundred

The Trustees realise that this news will come as a great disappointment to many. However, the safety and well-being of all supporters of the Vernon Mine Warfare and Diving Monument is paramount.

Despite the constraining effect of Coronavirus on the unveiling ceremony, the good news is that the Vernon Mine Warfare & Diving Monument is now fully assembled and the patination process started on 12 March. It is still on track to be installed at Gunwharf Quays later this month.

Don't get a crick in your neck but this is the latest photo, released last week, of the casting and assembly of the MCDOA-sponsored Vernon Mine Warfare & Diving Monument at the Morris Singer foundry at Lasham in Hampshire. The finished product will have a green-black patina.

PV Casting update 26 Feb 2020.jpg

Coronavirus permitting, the one-and-a-quarter life-size bronze sculpture will be unveiled and dedicated at a ceremony in Gunwharf Quays, the site previously occupied by HMS Vernon, on Wednesday 25 March.  As announced here and elsewhere, the deadline for applications to attend the ceremony and reception in the reserved area expired on 31 December but events can still be witnessed from the public area.

Our various contributions to date have paid for the statue but we need to keep the pennies rolling in to cover the unveiling ceremony, maintenance, insurance, lighting, signage and clever facilities to tell the full story of what it represents (we even have Portsmouth University on the case).  Make a direct donation here or purchase merchandise via the Project's online shop.  Another good way to donate is to buy PV tickets for the Portsmouth Lottery for as little as £1 per week.  The Project receives at least half the income:

Donations so far this year

New VMP logo 800 with background.jpg

So far this year, we have cause to be grateful to the RNCDA for its contribution of £1,000 towards the £10k estimated cost of permanent underwater lighting for the monument. This is in addition to the £200 it raised some years ago by auctioning a miniature donated by the Project.

We are also grateful to the Ton Class Association for making a further donation of £200 to assist with the costs of the monument's unveiling and inauguration at Gunwharf Quays on 25 March. This is in addition to the thousands of pounds already raised and donated by the Association and contributed by its members over the years.

Project Vernon has also received £5,000 this year from the MCDOA (Minewarfare & Clearance Diving Officers' Association) to add to its former donations of several thousand pounds, as well as older donations received from the MWA (Mine Warfare Association), AORNFCD (Association of RN First Class Divers), RANCDA (Royal Australian Navy Clearance Divers' Association) and the Hong Kong Police EOD Diving Unit. Thank you all.

We are also thankful to the Forsey family, especially daughter Catherine and son-in-law Bruce Chinery of Marlborough, Wiltshire, for their welcome contributions in memory of the late MCDO (Minewarfare & Clearance Diving Officer) Lt Cdr David Forsey MBE RN who crossed the bar on 28 December and whose funeral was held on Friday 7 February. Jill Hildesley (widow of the late MCDO Cdr Tim Hildesley MBE) of Drayton, Hampshire and Jillian Selwood (widow of the late MCDO Lt Cdr Dennis Selwood OBE RN) of Chichester, West Sussex have also made donations in their husbands’ memory.

Special thanks are due to former Royal Navy MCDOs David Burstall of Petersfield, David Bartlett MBE of Cosham, Peter Waddington of Helensburgh, Julian Malec OBE of Swanmore, Jon Riches of Bishops Waltham, Martyn Holloway of Langstone, Hampshire and Allan Rankin of Mountain Creek, QLD in Australia as well as two other ex-MCDOs who have donated significant sums but expressed the wish to remain anonymous. Their combined generosity has boosted the kitty by several thousand pounds.

Thank you also to David ‘Bagsy’ Baker of Gloucester for the latest of several donations running into hundreds of pounds and to David Lunn of Yelverton, Somerset, Marcia Ritthammer of Aberdeen, Christopher Wallis of Lee-on-the-Solent, former WO(D) Terry Settle MBE QGM BEM of Chatham, Geoff Mackett of Shepton Mallet, Alyson Bell of Chard, Somerset, Mike Cowles of Bristol, Francis Webb of Gosport, Hampshire and John Martin of Modbury, Devon for their kind contributions.

Our overseas contributors have included Steven Johnson of San Diego, California, Gary Fellman of Silver Spring, Maryland and Nigel Waterton of Tukwila, Washington State, all in the USA. These people are in addition to the many who have purchased merchandise via the website’s shop and boosted our funds further. Thank you one and all.

A huge 'thank you' to the Ton Class Association for making a further donation of £200 to assist with the costs of the monument's unveiling and inauguration at Gunwharf Quays on 25 March. This is in addition to the thousands of pounds already raised and donated by the Association and contributed by its members.

N.B. Project Vernon has also received significant lump sums from the MCDOA (Minewarfare & Clearance Diving Officers' Association), MWA (Mine Warfare Association), AORNFCD (Association of RN First Class Divers), RANCDA (Royal Australian Navy Clearance Divers' Association) and the Hong Kong Police EOD Diving Unit. Thank you all.

New VMP logo 800 with background.jpg

The unveiling ceremony for the Vernon Mine Warfare & Diving Monument is planned for Wednesday 25 March 2020 at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, hopefully to be conducted by a VVIP.

Priority for invitations is being given to significant fundraisers and organisations that have supported Project Vernon, i.e. the MCDOA, MWA, AORNFCD, TCA, RNCDA and RANCDA. Supporters will be added to the list if they submit their name, title, postal address, email address and a convincing case for consideration via the Contact Form on the PV website's Home page. The deadline for applications has been extended to 31 December 2019.

So far, the event organiser has compiled a list of several hundred people with more requests flooding in daily so you can imagine the funds still needed to cover the cost of catering, seating, security, etc. Our various contributions to date have paid for the statue but we need to keep the pennies rolling in to cover the unveiling ceremony, maintenance, insurance, lighting, signage and clever facilities to tell the full story of what it represents (we even have Portsmouth University on the case).
